Welcome to the 2010 Census Web site for Florida’s Disability Community. The purpose of this Web site is to help ensure that Floridians with disabilities are counted in the 2010 Census.
Research shows that people with disabilities are motivated by knowing that completing their census form can improve special services and the quality of life in their communities.
Your Role
Disability groups will be especially valuable partners in working toward this goal. If you are a disability advocacy organization, you can encourage your consumers and their families to complete the 2010 Census form by:
- Distributing 2010 Census materials at upcoming events and programs
- Incorporating 2010 Census messages in current projects
- Promoting the 2010 Census through internal and external communications channels
Get Your Materials
You can also boost awareness of the 2010 Census by participating in the following outreach activities:
- Florida Disability Community 2010 Census Training Webinars
- Florida Disability Community 2010 Census Outreach events
Door-to-door enumeration starts in May for those who did not mail back their census forms. All Census workers carry official government badges with their names and also have a “U.S. Census Bureau” bag. Note that Census takers will never ask to enter your home. If you have not received your census form, visit www.myfloridacensus.gov, so we can make sure every person in Florida is counted.
Benefits
Benefits of Census data for People with Disabilities:
Census data directly affect how more than $400 billion per year in federal funding is distributed to state, local and tribal governments. Being counted means well deserved dollars for your community.
Census data help guide local planning decisions, including where to provide additional social services, establish senior and child-care centers, build new roads, hospitals and schools, and determine locations for job training centers.
That means census data can directly affect the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families by impacting:
- Planning and construction of facilities for people with disabilities
- Transportation services and needs
- Community-based health care initiatives and programs
